Why art students shouldn't try to brand themselves
Ive just redesigned my site and it took me a while. I went through making myself a little brand, going by aliases and then trying to work them in. Trust me this just was not going to work. Im preparing early for my final show, 12 months in advance. If my site is ready to go, its less messing about when I could be mega-stressing over something silly. Already I see students trying to come up with...

This pretty much sums up my research for tonight. A very good article on CSS3 and Web Fonts. If you are interested in typography and/or web-design, you should make it a priority to read this.

This is crazy-detailed info on Web Fonts from the W3C. Could this be a whole new branch of typography?
Web fonts with @font-face - CSS3 →
This is AMAZING, but very scary! Licensed fonts are going to be exploited when this gets out. Its only a matter of time because it isn’t very supported yet. Safari has started a trend I think will be followed by all of the other browsers. They’ll have to, because its one big fight to the death out there in the “Browser-Wars”
CSS3 and Internet Typography
Why isn’t this being pushed? How does it get round font licensing? Couldn’t people set web-pages in an expensive typeface and any user with Safari start ‘stealing’ these fonts? Imagine If someone released a new font that could openly be used cross-platform, cross-browser, packaged with everything possible. They’d be famous! I bet someone wouldn’t let it...
Whilst the type servers went down I got bored so I thought that I’d commit to sorting my website. I managed to do it in under a day. Its based on legibility and simplicity of navigation. In terms of its design its an ultra-clean site based on modernism and the great Swiss (including Helvetica). Finally I think I have a showcase to house my work.
My kid could do that
When people say ‘my kid could do that’ it irritates me because they inherrently mean that they think it has no worth. The reality is quite the opposite. What got me thinking about this was the current Starbucks brand strategy. It has a similar effect on people. So anyway, I’ve come up with a theory. It is true that a child has the ability to technically resemble the style that...

Come on Biz!
Hacked off about the whole twitter SMS thing? Send “Boo” to www.twitter.com/biz (I know its not his fault, but seriously they could have made it a PRO feature or something. Besides if nothing else it’ll make him work harder at pushing the idea to mobile carriers.) Let’s a little intervention going.

Very nice use of type indeed.
I love jazz music. Everything about it seems to fit in with my outlook on music and design. You only have to pick up a copy of Straight No Chaser and the photography is sublime. Pick up a Blue Noe Record sleeve and basically you’re in heaven. I watched Live at Abbey Road the other day which had Herbie Hancock on it and the production values were superb. It oozed class and technical prowess....
Interesting device. Could have numerous uses.
Im going to take the plunge and do a new site. Its not been good so far. Host managed to mess up the cms install. Host managed to mess up the mysql for a manual install of cms. I know that I have a good idea for the site; but at the moment the host is holding me back. Support is appalling. So right now Im waiting for some other support guy to be less rude and ‘do it for me’ with the...
Really like this site design.
Five simple steps to better typography →
I have come to a decision regarding the ol’ dissertation! I don’t want to speak to soon on it, as some of the tutors at BIAD have told me to keep it under wraps. What I will say is that Matt, Susan & I came up with the idea a few months back and has always needed theoretical grounding which I hope I will achieve in my essay. Its gonna be dealing in new media application, layout and...
